Who Has Time to Meditate?

Yes, I know I will be more peaceful if I meditate every day.  Do I do it?  No.  I constantly struggle with getting my butt on my beautiful red satin zafu.  For heavens sake, there is so much “to do”.

So what is the ROI (yes, return on investment) to meditating?  More peace; theoretically more love, more compassion, kindness and more openness.  We all want this – at least I think we do.  There is also tons of data that it helps our health – nothing to slough off!  

But how in the world can people meditate when they wake up in the morning, get dressed for work, get their kids ready, make lunch, drive the kids to school, go to work, come home, get the kids, make dinner, do the dishes, relax for an hour and crawl into bed by 11?  Seems pretty unrealistic.  I, personally, don’t have that excuse.  But I can find plenty of others, believe me.

Yet, I can unequivocally say that mediation changed my life.  I used to feel like a ping pong ball, always bouncing off other people’s reactions, taking things way too personally, feeling a sort of unrelenting discontent and worst, my mind was on some crazy overdrive all the time.

I started taking classes, then, day long retreats, then I bought a cushion.  Something new started to happen.  It was as though a new place was being born inside of me.  A home.  A home within which I could rest.  It was calm, quiet and present.  This place became my center, my default, and everything outside of myself became second place.

I began to be not only aware of my thoughts, but able to choose my thoughts.  I soon realized that the ones that made me feel terrible didn’t have to have their way with me.  My mind, my state of being was my choice.  I began to feel free, open, and more present.   Most importantly, it made me be able to love and be loving in a way I hadn’t ever been able to before.  Oh, and happy.  I forgot happy.  It is so natural to me now.  And grateful.  Gratitude and happiness are such a lovely pairing – they seem to feed off of each other.

I wish for you deep peace.  It is why we have this website.  And, when you get a chance, five minutes of breathing, feeling the breath, noticing the thoughts, coming back to the breath, realizing that you are thinking, coming back to the breath.  This is why they call it a practice.
