Coffee Magic from the Woods

July 25, 2011 By: Mary Lane Category: Feminine Wisdom, Mind Body Spirit

Mary's forest

I am a classic witch in the woods. You have to drive up a windy dirt road to get to my home. No neighbors in sight, although they are tucked away here and there so that I have community. Outside, medicine is growing everywhere; inside it is drying everywhere. When I’m not playing with my herbs I am gardening, gathering wild mushrooms or other seasonal bounty, cooking, writing, sitting around the fire, hanging with other women. I sleep with my cat who is a dainty, fierce, huntress that is shamelessly adored by me and everyone else who happens to come to my home.

Several years ago I was told that coffee trashes my kidneys. Knowing that they support the amount of sexual energy, (Qi) I have, I knew immediate action was required. That was one thing I wasn’t willing to compromise. I found a basic recipe for an herbal coffee substitute, played around with some roots from my yard, added a little local honey and dark chocolate and magically came up with a decoction that is a powerful tonic for the liver, kidneys and heart while building the blood and Qi. Add a little cream and you have a delicious latte. How’s that for a little magic? I hope you enjoy it!

February 09, 2011 By: Patricia Tedeschi Category: Mind Body Spirit

Amla Herb

English Name:        Indian Gooseberry, Emblic Myrobalan
Hindu Name:        Amla
Sanskrit Name:        Amalakai
Botanical Name:    Emblica officinalis, Phyllanthus emblica, Euphorbiaceae

Amla (Amalakai) is a jivaniya herb or life-giving herb.  The amla fruit and its versatile strengths are considered to work like a mother.  This nutritive plant provides extreme protection against the harshness of the environment making your hair strong and preventing premature graying.  Caring for all of your hair needs, its potent anti-oxidants provide shine and luster, while the rich mineral content prevents breakage and hair loss.

The amla fruit is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C providing the equivalent of 26 oranges, and it is said to increase vitality or rasa (the sweetness of life).  It has been known to enhance cellular growth causing the hair to grow thick and full.  It helps reduce the pitta dosha (characteristic), which in Ayurveda is the dosha that is responsible for hair loss and graying when it is out of balance.

Amla is a natural astringent and skin toner that works on both hair and skin.  It helps to promote luxuriant hair even as it controls hair loss.  It may also remove mild dandruff from hair scalp while giving body to the hair.

Amla  is one of the world’s oldest and most effective natural hair conditioners.  It provides a protective coating and helps make your hair shiny.  A good oil massage with Better Botanicals Herbal Hair Oil (with Amla) also helps stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth.

Green Bliss Smoothie

July 28, 2010 By: Matsya Siosal Category: Mind Body Spirit, Raw Food

The trick to making any major change is to embrace the process and go gradually. Earlier this year I began to explore raw foods with an open-ended intention: to arrive at a way of eating that fully supported my mind, body and spirit and that left me feeling vibrant, balanced and aware. A few months in I added the intention to have a daily green smoothie. At first I would have one a few times a week, and now 7 months later I look forward to it each morning.

I love experimenting with all the beautiful superfoods out there and devour books and blogs and videos on raw foods daily. My latest favorite is something I’m calling Green Bliss. It’s the richest, loveliest emerald green and maybe it’s just my changing taste buds, but I sometimes think it’s too delicious to be a plant-powered healing potion.

This green smoothie is especially beneficial for women and is ultra-rich in key nutrients like iron, Omega fatty acids, calcium and protein, plus powerful phytonutrients that fight disease. These nutrients are also calming to the nervous system and tissues. I swear you can feel your body coming alive as you drink! Try one when stressed out, having PMS or to move past a craving. The deep level of nutrition will satisfy what your body is really asking for. You’ll find yourself alkalized and revitalized with a steady source of high-vibration energy coursing through your being. To make it simply combine all of the following ingredients in a blender and whip it up. Read more »

Lovin’ my new herb garden

May 17, 2010 By: celedra Category: Mind Body Spirit

What could be better then living right off the earth!

Except for bananas, I can grow all the fruits and veggies I need to live on.  Oh, and avocados.  I love avocados and eat them without reserve.  Why wouldn’t they do to my insides what they would do to my skin?  Make everything luscious and moist and soft.

I wonder if Whole Foods will go bankrupt without my daily attendance?  Probably not.  I love to carry my wicker basket with the big handle out to my garden with a pair of garden scissors and gather a meal.  I am unrelentingly always in awe!  How did my life get this bountiful? There is a split that is beginning to soften between gathering veggies in my garden and having an intimate relationship with my computer for hours at a time.  It’s nice.

This herb garden used to be a elevated spiral, except the spiral kept falling down.  So, this is what I created instead.  I love it.  It feels ancient to me.  Here are a few exquisite reasons to eat herbs. Read more »
