Power Drinks: Green Smoothies

Kale-Blueberry Smoothie

If you would have told my ten-year-old self that I would one day snack on green smoothies I’d have said “yeah right”. But a few decades later and my taste for health and vitality holds as much decision making power as less noble appetites. In pursuit of a nutritious and balancing way of eating that is also delicious, I’ve fallen in love with green smoothies. Before you too wrinkle your nose and say “yeah right” just give it a try.

Green smoothies are an especially easy and delicious way for women to consume plenty of hormone balancing cruciferous veggies each day. A bunch of kale blended with frozen blueberries, bananas and cacao powder is a treat to sip throughout the morning and by lunch you’ve already had several servings of antioxidant-rich produce without having to chew through a big bowlfull of leaves. Not that salads aren’t a pleasure to eat – but it’s great to mix it up and keep things interesting, especially when a commitment to a new, healthy habit is still setting.

Kale and spinach are my favorite greens to blend into smoothies but you can use romaine, beet tops and other greens, sprouts and herbs. In addition to the hormone balancing effects of cruciferous vegetables like kale, green smoothies are full of fiber, calcium, vitamins A and C and other essential nutrients.

Ingredients like aloe vera, flax seeds, coconut oil, maca root powder, spirulina and other superfoods make your smoothie into a Power Drink that keeps you energized and alkalized (a more alkaline pH is preferable, acidic pH leads to inflammation) for hours. It’s fun to experiement but if you’ve never made a green smoothie you may want to follow or get inspiration from someone else’s recipe. Though I’d been blending up protein shakes and fruit smoothies for years, adding greens just seemed so exotic.

For some ideas check out The Lazy Raw Foodist’s Guide by Laura Bruno, it provides several simple, nutrient-rich recipes for smoothies and power drinks. In a post last month Celedra shared her favorite recipe and here is mine:

Several cups of kale or spinach roughly chopped

1 cup of frozen berries

2 tbs cacao powder

1 ripe bananas

1 tsp spirulina

I place all of this in my blender and pour coconut water in to cover before blending. I especially like Amy & Brian’s coconut juice with pulp. Experiment with adding freshly squeezed orange juice, chunks of mango, nuts, parsley, cucumber or avocado.  Bon appetit!
