My Little Mouse in Crimson Robes

On this glorious spring weekend, I am deeply moved by the ever forthcoming abundance of nature. Rebirth and rejuvenation flaunts itself in front of me as baby birds sing with the pure joy of being alive. My many rose bushes, which I had feared that I’d pruned just a bit too much this year, are unrelentingly bursting with new life, and last years perennials, some mistakenly hidden under the new bed of compost, are exhibiting a powerfully enthusiastic joie de vivre.

I love that no matter what else is going on in the world, or at times my contracted little mind, the birds continue to sing the praises of life, acorns keep falling from the trees and the roses keep blooming. These are the true teachers of life, aren’t they! I remember being on the coast of Mendocino, sitting at the beach and watching a very little mouse trying to climb a very large rock. With all of its strength, up it would go, about a foot, only to slide back down – time and time again. For a long time I watched this tenacious little mouse in his one foot universe. I wish I could have said to him, “Little mouse, this rock is bigger then you can imagine, with so many paths and caves and opportunities for fun and exploration. Let go of the struggle. Step back and see the magnificence of the universe that you are in.” He is my little teacher mouse in crimson robes.

Deep gratitude for the abundance of great wisdom that all of nature provides, for the beauty and the sustenance, and for the remembering of the deepest truths of life.
