Meditation – a life changer that’s free!

I hate to think of who I would be without my spiritual practice. It’s actually really scary.

I remember probably 28 years ago working in a hospital, just having graduated from nursing school (a profession that I was not well equipped for). There was a wonderful, loving nurse that seemed as though she was pure love. No pretense, no trying, just open and present. Someday, I said to myself, I will be like that – open, loving and present.

I prayed, meditated, read, journaled, when to therapy, meditation retreats, did breath work,, women’s rituals in the woods, at hot springs, sang chants, took Shamanic training in Mexico, prayed in sweat lodges, went on vision quests, did 3 week silent retreats, tried to learn Tibetan to better practice Tibetan buddhism, I was Rolfed, massaged, and numerous other things that I shouldn’t write about – in the quest of that open, loving presence. To be that – that which is nothing and everything at the same time.

Finally, it all boiled down to a simple daily practice of just breathing. Every day. I would trick myself in order to get myself on the cushion, usually by bringing my tea to my zafu. Sometimes I meditate in bed – gosh, I hope that counts!

It has changed my life. I am peaceful – most of the time. I am open – most of the time. I am present – most of the time. It’s all I can ask for and I am deeply grateful for this. If my spiritual practice. So simple and so profound.

Love and blessings,
